Virtual History - Settling America

Virtual History - Settling America is a totally engaging, multi-level computer simulation that was developed with state and national standards to support targeted learning objectives and student outcomes for early U.S. history. In this 5-7 day module, students assume the role of a settlement leader as they prepare for their voyage to the new world. Tasks include preparing for a cross-Atlantic voyage, starting a settlement in the new world, meeting survival needs, trade, interaction with indigenous people, punishing settlers that refuse to work, planting tobacco as a cash crop, building a protective wall, and more. Students must direct their settlers to do the tasks required for survival in the new world. If students' actions fail to meet the needs of the settlers, the settlers will die from starvation and their settlement will fail.

Virtual History - Settling America is a highly visual and interactive computer simulation that comes with everything you need to effectively teach a class. This includes pre-use activities, training videos, standards-based reading screens, built-in assessment, and post-use essays that encourage Internet use. Lesson plans, answer keys and simulation hints are provided.

Reading and Assessment
At each level of the simulation students are presented with reading screens. These screens contain detailed, standards-based, information on early American history and create a strong interdisciplinary tie to reading, reading comprehension, spelling, and grammar. Each of these screens is followed by a short quiz. Students cannot return to the simulation until they have answered all of the questions correctly. This motivates and keeps students on task, even students with special learning needs such as ADHD.
